John Minor

Head of Special Risks, Impello Global

John has been helping clients mitigate the financial impacts of emerging-market risks for over three decades, developing bespoke insurance solutions tailored to each client's needs. He specializes in political risk, sovereign default and counterparty risk, structured credit, and trade disruption insurance, with a talent for structuring complex syndicated placements across both private and public markets.

Work he's most proud of includes developing policy templates for carbon-credit transactions, pioneering systematic quantitative risk assessment in political risk insurance, and supporting clients and colleagues in Ukraine — including a first-of-its-kind war-risks treaty reinsurance facility, a public-private partnership with the DFC and local Ukrainian insurers.

Before his insurance career, John taught at several universities, including the Wuhan Urban Construction Institute in China, where he learned enough Mandarin to buy produce from local farmers. He and his wife, Wendy, are east-coasters who raised three midwestern children in Chicago, where they live in the Kenwood neighborhood.
